The Art of Al Fresco

This suburban family home’s outdoor space has been carefully designed to become a seamless extension of the client’s recently renovated kitchen living area. With views over the expansive gardens, the design balances functionality with ambience, creating a hub for summer gatherings, al fresco dining, and leisurely evenings.

Brief.

The brief called for an outdoor kitchen that could elevate every occasion, from casual weekday pizza nights to weekends hosting friends and family parties. The kitchen was to be used year-round, configured with durable Vlaze furniture, robustly built to last British winters while still being stylish and refined. Located below a canopy to protect from the elements, a layout was explored to offer flexibility dependent on different uses and weathers. In close proximity to the interior kitchen, the spaces were to feel cohesive, with a focus on clean lines however the exterior was to feel slightly softer, a stepping stone between the cabinetry’s architectural forms and the natural woodland and shrubbery of the garden.

Design.

Sage green enamelled cabinet fronts set a soothing tone, anchored by the striking, stone-clad backsplash, and a chunky shelf provides a spot to display and store items to keep close to hand. Subtle LED lighting highlights curated greenery and material textures, casting a warm glow and setting an ambience of quiet sophistication. An integrated barbecue hood and pizza oven form a practical prep and cook space, complete with a built-under fridge to keep food fresh on warm summer days. A perpendicular sink run has ample wash space, with a dishwasher to keep garden party glassware and dishes out of the main kitchen, a glass fronted drinks fridge is the perfect hosting addition, strategically located away from the work area so guests can grab refreshments without interruption.

Central to the kitchen is a mobile island unit, which can be used for pizza making for the children and cocktail mixing during events, the seating along the back creates a sociable setup with relaxed perch points for conversations to flow. The island can be easily repositioned to suit the occasion, pulled forward for larger gatherings, tucked aside for open circulation, or angled to better connect with the views.
